INTRODUCING
Gerry the Fairy

Here he is! Right in front of our eyes in black and white. Let's say hello.
Hello Gerry the Fairy! Hmm, apparently he's not speaking right now, maybe he's not even listening. He can be an obnoxious little fairy sometimes. Well, nevermind, I'll just tell you a bit about him.

Q. Who is Gerry the fairy?

A. He is one of the characters you'll meet in my first book!

3 ½ Facts about Gerry the Fairy

  • Gerry the fairy is short.
  • Gerry the fairy plays a bass guitar.
  • Gerry the fairy likes to eat beans.
  • And I’m pretty sure he is the hairiest fairy on the island!

How do you pronounce Gerry?

Hmm, Gerry rhymes with Fairy. And I pronounce it 'Jerry' like Tom and Jerry (the cartoon cat and mouse). Does that help?

Q. Will all the characters in your book illustrated like Gerry the fairy?

A. No. It's not an illustrated book. It's a chapter book for middle graders with a black and white interior.
Aside from chapter headers, it might have a few black and white images here and there but it's not an illustrated book so don't hold your breath...
I like to take time out from writing to do little rough sketches of the characters, scenes, items etc - they won't appear in the book but I'll probably share some of them in the bonus content section of this website just for fun.

Q. Why did you illustrate Gerry the fairy?

A. For now, I'll just say I drew the character Gerry the Fairy long before I wrote about him. When he appeared years later in this story I thought it would be fun to create a more detailed visual image of him.
So I grabbed a pencil and after doing a few sketches to help me decide what I wanted him to look like. I decided I wanted Gerry the fairy to have a lot of substance, I wanted him to appear very solid. I wanted him to be detailed and textured.
I chose to use oils on canvas board because it was a practical, quick, and FUN way to achieve the type of image I wanted.. I added the guitar strings and made him black and white in Photoshop.
Yep, and then I laughed and got back to work on my writing...
