Can authors illustrate their own books?


Some people seem to find the idea of an author illustrating their own book a little strange. 
I have read many articles advising writers not to illustrate their own books. This may be sound advice for many writers; after all, just because you can paint a picture with words doesn't mean you know which way to hold a brush. However, people can be talented and skilled in more than one area; even writers... 
A few months ago I started composing a list of my favourite books from when I was a child along with the books my children enjoyed. I found it interesting that many of our favourite books were written and illustrated by the same person.  
Below is a list of books that were illustrated by the author (Or written by the artist – whichever way you prefer)
